COGNITIVE PLAY

WATER TABLE WITH SOAPY WATER AND PLASTIC CUPS(12-24 months)

Fill a basin with slightly soapy water and put cups in the water. Encourage the child to fill the cups and dump the cups out. Children will be amazed how the water fills the cups and what happens when they empty the cups. Children will discover new ways to use the cups and the water and learn a lot from having fun and getting a little wet.

MAKING A HEALTHY LUNCH TOGETHER (18 months and beyond)

Help your child make healthy choices for a lunch you will prepare together. Build a sandwich and offer a fruit option. Help your child fill their drink cup. Enjoy your healthy creation together!

WHAT CAN MY CHILD LEARN FROM THESE ACTIVITIES?

WATER TABLE WITH CUPS

This exciting activity will teach your child cause and effect. Your child will gain of sense of independence and confidence as they see what they are able to do on their own. This activity promotes task completion. Language skills are also enforced by using hands on vocabulary such as "pour", "full", "empty", "heavy", "float", and "wet". Parents can incorporate simple science lessons into this activity. Letting the child see the cup float, or sink or watching bounce up when pushed into the water are all science related.  Of course both of you are likely to end up laughing and playing with cups, and this will also enforce social-emotional development.

MAKING A HEALTHY LUNCH

Giving your child choices about what to prepare for lunch helps their cognitive development. Choosing two pieces of bread for the sandwich, and allowing them to follow directions and a sequence of events can enforce routines. Incorporating a counting element helps enforce language and number skills. Color identification and broadening vocabulary can be a part of this activity. Making a healthy lunch uses all of the senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste, making them more aware of the world around them. Making lunch reinforces culture and hygiene skills. This activity allows for scaffolding. By providing time for you and your growing child to spend together, you also enforce social-emotional development.
